The Columbia University Press...Hi again Becky! :)

The Columbia University Press evidently archives expansions on its articles for a very limited time period. Apologies to any who clicked on that link, although Kabat's article is good in and of itself. You can find my expansion at Global Health Law intact however at:

http://globalhealthlaw.wordpress.com/2009/01/11/third-hand-smoke/#comment-52

Meanwhile the craziness has grown. One professor is getting a hundred thousand or so to scrape dust from the floors of smoke chambers and mush it into bleeding injured rats or somesuch (the details of how the "experiment" is set up aren't yet available). Why would someone lay out a hundred grand for this? Simple: she's going to show that "thirdhand smoke" inhibits wound healing.

See my article "Third Hand Smoke Causes Leprosy!" at:

http://www.smokersclubinc.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=5188

or in the Club Newsletter for Aug. 6th at:

http://www.smokersclubinc.com/

- MJMMichael J. Too often, only the headline is what people remember, and the headline is often the most fictitious part.Becky Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01100626198456326185noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-492013064573371146.post-15421556047335225622010-01-24T09:34:39.816-08:002010-01-24T09:34:39.816-08:00Whoops! The beginning of my attempt at compiling a list got tagged on to the end of my previous post. :> Well, they're both good references to look at in any event!

- MJMMichael J. You'll find the same thing and worse in almost every secondhand smoke study out there that gets played up to the headlines. I started trying to compile a list here and then realized jush how silly that would be. They're virtually ALL garbage. Whether it's in Pueblo, Scotland, England, Italy, Helena, Bowling Green, New York, Wales, Monroe, Indianapolis, Denmark, wherever... every one of these studies has (deliberate?) built-in weaknesses that allow them to get the results that their paymasters demand.

Do the paymasters have that big an influence? Check out my aftercomments for Jacob Grier's column at:

http://www.jacobgrier.com/blog/archives/2210.html

and decide for yourself.

Meanwhile, if you want to do more specific research on any of the ban/heart-attack studies noted above, just find the news-headlines about them through google, note the date, and then check that month's blogging at Dr. Siegel's site (see the right hand side bar for the monthly archives) at:

http://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/

and be sure to read the comments for the blog entries as well. Siegel usually does an excellent job, but a lot of the commenters have very insightful input as well.

For a full analysis of the grandfather of these studies, the "Great Helena Heart Miracle," start at:

http://www.acsh.org/factsfears/newsID.990/news_detail.asp

and follow the various links referenced in that article for the full story. Helena's "disappearing data" is even more outrageous than the researchers deliberately ignoring the bar employment data in Klein's study (the Grier article above.)

Keep on talking and keep on fighting Becky!

Michael J.
